Section 5: Documenting Data from a Virtual Reality Project#

5.5 Documenting the delivery platform#

It is useful to document the delivery platforms on which the world has been tested. This information helps with both maintenance and testing of the model and in archiving it for subsequent reuse.

It is useful to document the following information, for every delivery platform that has been tested.

Operating system
Record the operating system on which this delivery platform runs, e.g. Windows 2000.

Browser software
Record the browser version(s) on which the world has been tested, e.g. Netscape Navigator 4.75.

Plug-in / viewer
Record any plug-in(s) or viewer(s) required to view the world on this platform. Include details of the name, address and URL of the source from which the plug-in or viewer can be obtained. It is useful to describe how the plug-in should be installed and note any optional settings.

Scripting languages
Document the scripting language and version number used in the world and describe how it is implemented in the delivery platform.

Hardware system
It is useful to document the minimum hardware specification required to run the world, i.e. the processor, RAM and graphics card.

Network connection
It is useful to document the minimum network connection required to run the world, e.g. a dial-up 56 kbits modem, 2 mbpits broadband connection.
